From the President...

JaynePresident
Welcome back everyone to a new decade. WOW!. I hope everyone enjoyed their summer break and are refreshed to start 2020 with enthusiasm. These seasons flash by so quickly. Remember to rug up warm when attending RDA over the next two terms.

Our main focus for 2020 is still on Rider Outcomes, which we take very seriously. We continue to have great Stakeholder relationships and are appreciative as always for all the many donations that help us continue to reach more Riders.
This first part of the year has seen us focusing on our Operational Certificate Review, which ensures we reach the highest standard of operating expected as an RDA. This review includes contracts, Health & Safety Standards, Rider Programme standards, Horse Programme standards, Marketing and Fundraising standards to name a few. This must be passed every year to be affiliated to our national body, NZRDA. Each year our Committee also reviews our Strategic Plan, Annual Plan and Budget so we have clarity on what we are focusing on for the year.

Financial objectives for 2020 remain focused on improving our facility, and further development plans include a training room. This would be inside our existing building and used for many different purposes. Our Therapy Advisor would use it for warming up riders before their session and also the coaches and volunteers would have a place to do their training days. We would also be able to hire this room to generate income. We are in the process of trying to get funding for this project so watch this space for future updates.

We have some fundraisers coming up this year. Entertainment fundraiser is back and better than ever. With so many new cafes, bars and restaurants we are spoilt for choice. This year there are no books as it is now completely electronic via an app on your phone. $69.99 Please support our fundraising efforts and be rewarded at the same time!

To our volunteers, a grateful thank you to all of you for returning to give your time to CRDA. Without your continued support, we would not be able to carry out our life-changing programmes

COVID-19 is changing daily and so too must our plans. We are receiving daily updates from NZRDA and will continue to operate until we hear of any concerns towards our operations. Please bear with us as we work our way through this difficult situation.

Warm wishes
Jayne Findlay

Emma’s Horse Care Report

Thank you to all those who looked after our horses over the long summer break. They have all come back looking great and ready for work. Riley is back on trial and proving to be a gentle giant so far.

A huge thank you to all who have donated some lovely horse gear recently. We even had a collection of brand new items brought for us, from stunning halters and lead ropes to brushes and hoof picks; it is very much appreciated. What a lucky team of horses, getting rewarded for all their hard work.

Volunteer Assistants

If you enjoy working with Horses and /or Special Needs persons, Christchurch Riding for the Disabled needs Volunteer Assistants!
We hold sessions 9:00am - 2:30pm each weekday during school terms.
Our Coaches depend on volunteers to lead horses and
work with riders. Training is given to enable volunteers to feel confident and safe.
We have had a wonderful response from radio adverts and our many leaflets being displayed on various Community Notice Boards. However, we still need your help - if you can spare one day a week to assist our wonderful Coaches in their efforts to give our Riders the benefit of a therapeutic riding session we would be most grateful.
If you are over 16 years old and can give a few hours, please contact us with your preferred day.

Charles's Rider Report

Hello to all riders and their families!
Just a couple of reminders! Be sure to come to your riding sessions, not only wearing the right clothing for the weather that day but also good sturdy footwear, preferably leather! And please wear long trousers! Long trousers will keep your skin safe and comfortable!
And now a reflection! Horses simply live in the moment, the "Now". They exist in harmony with their environment; they live in structured communities (herds) in which they recognise the advantages of being lead by stronger and wiser heads; they show respect for this hierarchial system, and this affords them a relatively peaceful existence and protection from all that would prey upon them. Their lives are uncluttered by the unnecessary, and they are simply free to operate in a loving, respectful way, accepting of all that is around them. This is why horses are such wonderful animals to work with, and why they are such a therapeutic medium for us to work with at the CRDA! There could not be better therapy for our riders than working with horses just being horses!
Sadly, we seem to live in a world today where human populations are burgeoning out of control, personal space is no longer being respected, and perhaps the true value of life is not being recognised for what it should be. Are we losing, or rather tending to not recognise our innate ability to love, respect and accept all that is within our world and around us? If this is true, then perhaps there is much that we can learn from just observing our friends the horses. What do you think about this, people?
Now, remember! If any riders or their caregivers have any issues concerning their time at CRDA, then please get in touch with me, either by phone or email. As your Rider's Representative, I am here to listen and to help!
Meanwhile, I wish you all the very best for safe and enjoyable riding at the CRDA this term!
